DIY Home Security Tips
With a burglary happening every fifteen seconds in the US, home security has never been more important than it is today. Many homes lack basic home security because they find that it is too expensive. However, this is not the case. There are many security precautions that can be implemented in the home and all of these can be done by you, the homeowner. Here are a few do it yourself home security tips to get your home on the safety track fast.
- Deadbolt it
Head to the home improvement store and pick up a couple deadbolts. These are much more secure than the primary lock to your front or back door. Regular door locks can be easily picked. With a deadbolt, you never have to worry about the lock getting picked. It is important to lock all locks at night or when no one is in the home.
- Security System
You might be thinking that home security systems are extremely expensive but you are wrong. There are many DIY home security systems that can fit any family’s budget. Many companies also offer great prices on security systems. Some just have an alarm, other have full home coverage. Do your research. One might find that ADT in Mount Vernon suits their home more than another home security system. Placing a home security system sign in the front yard or window is also a great burglar deterrent.
- Beware of Dog
Dogs are good alarms with their barking. If you have a dog put up a “beware of dog” sign in the yard to ward off intruders. If you do not have a dog, put in an alarm that is a recording of a dog barking. This will dissuade a potential intruder from continuing to break into your home.
- Motion Lights
Install a couple motion lights around the home. Burglars will panic at the sudden light. If someone enters a certain area they will be illuminated.
- Remove Obstructions
Large bushes or overgrown bushes in front of windows or in areas around the home give burglars a place to hide and go unseen. Keep these trimmed down or take them out of the yard completely. Doing this will get rid of hiding places for burglars and leave your yard open and visible to you from your home. Keeping the front yard clean and well-kept will also deter intruders from your home.
- Fake Cameras
Install some fake cameras around the outside of your home. Burglars will notice this and quickly remove your home from their list. The fake cameras give off the impression that you have an extensive security system within the home.
Always give the impression that your home is inhabited at all times. When you leave your home during the day pretend to say goodbye to someone. Leave a light on at night or a TV to make burglars think someone is awake.
The most important tip to keeping your home safe is to keep all doors and windows locked! There are many simple things that home owners can do themselves to prevent a home intrusion. All of these tips will create a safer home. There is no such thing as being too safe when it comes to home security.
