  2. I think the tangible vs the physical also depends on the age of the child and how many physical items they are also getting.

    As my nephews/nieces and great nephews and nieces got to those elementary and middle school years I found experiences often trumped gifts that would be open and forgotten in minutes. Sometimes it opened a door to a long term interest, sometimes it was just a day of fun.

    The younger the child the harder they have with delayed gratification and the more they appreciate toy now.
